Go for the gold

Planning a wedding can sometimes feel like an Olympic feat (the bride gets gold in the end!) but every four years, we're reminded of the true endurance of the real Olympians. And while most people go through their lives without seeing an Olympic athlete in person, I was lucky to attend the same wedding as beach volleyball gold-medalist, Misty May-Treanor (far left), last fall.

My husband's cousin, Lauren Lahmeyer (middle, with sister Jenna Lahmeyer Brannon, right) married Taylor Tankersley in Florida. Taylor and Misty's husband, Matt Treanor, both play pro baseball for the Florida Marlins.

Since spotting her at the wedding, it's even more thrilling to see the coverage of Misty and her volleyball partner, Kerri Walsh, in Beijing. These gals are the women to beat: they came into the 2008 Olympics as the reigning world champion.

During all of the reporting on these two sports stars, I read that Misty doesn't wear her wedding band in matches but Kerri does, and she accidentally lost her gold wedding ring in the sand in a match on Sunday. Thankfully, it was found after volunteers searched the sand with metal detectors. Now, if the ladies just had a good bridesmaid nearby who could've held that ring until after the ceremony... the medal presentation ceremony!

(p.s. Thanks so much for the photo, Uncle Wayne! I spotted myself in the background, too...)

Dear Diary... I want to lose weight

You could choose a "Hello Kitty" diary with a little lock and a pen with feathers on the end... or you could be fancy, and pick up a formal, leather-bound tome with an elegant Pelikan pen. Or you could just download and print out several copies of the food journal from BridesmaidEssentials.com. Either way, that food diary just might help you double your weight loss!

"The more food records they kept, the more they lost," said Dr. Victor J. Stevens, a senior investigator at Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. "Those who kept no food records lost about 9 pounds, and those who kept six or more per week lost about 18 pounds. That's a whopping difference."

In a HealthDay News article, Dr. Stevens says it's all about accountability... to yourself. If you're honest about what you've eaten and diligent about recording it, you can clearly see where you're taking in those extra calories. It's also suggested that you update your food journal after each meal, so you're more accurate.

Knowing that you have to document all your food choices throughout the day just might make you think twice: the thought of writing out "1 bag of peanut M&Ms, 1 Twinkie, 1 Diet Coke" in black and white just isn't so tasty after all.

Maid money

Every woman who's been a bridesmaid knows she often has to dig deep -- in her purse -- to fulfill nuptial obligations. Between the showers and the bachelorette party, the tally can add up quickly.

If your personal budget is already tighter than Joan Rivers' face, there's hope to keep yourself out of debt while helping your friend say, "I do."

I recently logged on to my eBay account to sell some old workout DVDs (I'm enjoying my gym membership much more now, thank you) and I saw this headline on the home page: "did you know that the average person has $1200 in sellable itmes just sitting around the house?" I did not know that!

I also caught a great segment on ABC's "Good Morning America" about the same issue. Workplace contributor Tory Johnson mentioned the findings of a Nielsen survey that showed, " the average household has 52 unused items originally worth $3,100." So she linked up with a New York couple to help them find their hidden cash. She spent just a week with them. "In that short time we uncovered more than $10,000 worth of stuff," said Johnson. Ten... thousand... dollars. Holy yard sales, Batman! That's a lot of money.

Surely, I had a couple hundred bucks worth of sellable items in our house, right? As it turns out, I did! So far, through eBay, Craigslist and Amazon* (see the "how-to" below), my husband and I have already made $731.72 in just a few weeks. We still have a large pile of stuff to list.

If your stuffed, overflowing closet needs the most attention, you can always sell that old bridesmaid dress. Check out the BridesmaidEssentials.com Flip That Dress section. For a simple $10 listing fee you can post your dress and sell it to someone else. Thus, making room in your home for something new & fabulous... or just making room in your wallet for some extra cash!

**HOW TO SELL ON AMAZON.COM: Create an account or sign in to your Amazon.con account. Then click on "your account" in the upper righthand area of the screen. Once in the "your account" section, click on the "sell your stuff" icon. Usually, you'll need a UPC or other barcode information from the product so Amazon can exactly identify the item.

SEX and the pretty

I think I'm one of the few people in modern America without HBO but I've still managed to catch enough episodes of "Sex And The City" to know the storylines and really enjoy Carrie & company. So while I'm on a family vacation right now, I decided to catch a matinee of the new SATC movie based on the megahit series.

My mother-in-love (we thought "in-law" sounds too much like "outlaw") is a huge fan of the show. It's her TV version of comfort food to indulge when she's home from work on a sick day -- "I watch it and forget I don't feel well," she laughed. She's been eagerly anticipating the film's release so we went on a girls' date to the movies. Unfortunately we were too late (and the line was too long) to grab any popcorn before the previews finish. Oh well, that's just one day sooner I can fit into a smaller dress size, right?!

I promise not to give any spoiler information but it's no secret there's a wedding in the movie and Carrie's the bride. That means, her three best buds would be her bridesmaids. I was incredibly curious to see how the fashionista would dress her righthand women... and they looked fantastic! Each woman wore a solid colored dress -- one in black, another in blue, and the third in red. Each dress was, of course, fashionably unique but not so much as to draw attention from the star: the bride.

This is not an unusual wedding trend right now. We've seen the gorgeous spectrum of styles and colors on the Lela Rose sketches for the recent wedding of First Daughter, Jenna Bush.

As you'd expect, the movie is heavy on the fabulous fashions but it's mostly about phenomenal friends. I have to admit, I cried -- several times -- at the very funny moments, and at the surprisingly touching scenes. I really, really enjoyed the movie!

So now there are thousands of rabid -- er, "loyal" -- fans of SATC who are anxiously awaiting the DVD release to watch -- and pause -- to catch everything they missed during their first screening. So if you have a bride who thinks she's a Carrie clone, start planning a "Sex And The City" themed bachelorette party or bridal shower. If she wants to stay in, you can stir up a batch of cosmos and watch the movie on DVD or episodes from the previous seasons.

But if the bride wants a night on the town, then slip on a pair of Manolos or Jimmy Choos (or any stylish pair of stilettos as an homage to the shoe gods), put on a slinky dress and find your local hot spots to dine & dish. Then, you can all get together for a slumber party, change into PJs and find your inner goddess while watching the movie or episode DVDs... hello lover!

I get around

Get ready to fill up with ridiculously high-priced gas and hit the tourist-filled roadways & skyways... it's nearly Memorial Day weekend! This popular travel time inspired my latest idea for a unique wedding shower theme. If the bride-to-be sees more movies on a plane than in the theater and she prefers the soil of a new town between her toes rather than the familiar carpet of her apartment, then she might enjoy the adventure of a travel-themed wedding shower. Encourage guests to bring a gift with the gal-on-the-go in mind.

Here are the BridesmaidEssentials.com top 10 great gift ideas for the girl who really gets around:

1. Blister prevention (Dr. Scholl's cotton "moleskin" padding - $5)
2. Travel-sized containers (ContainerStore.com - $8)
3. Luggage tags (Organize.com - fill-in; Swoozies.com - personalized)
4. Jewelry bag (TurqJewelry.com $12 + monogramming)
5. Travel neck pillow (Magellans.com - $16)
6. Travel umbrella (Totes micro pocket umbrella - $18)
7. Hanging cosmetic case (MarilynsKeepsakes.com - $32)
8. Slip on shoes for airport security line (Reef stash sandals - $46)
9. Passport cover (GraphicImage.com - $52)
10. Digital camera (Kodak EasyShare M853 - $115)

The bride can use these presents if the next plane ticket takes her on a trip to grow her business or a jaunt to strengthen the bond with her bridesmaids... or if she's taking the most exciting excursion of her life: the honeymoon!

(Memorial Day note: To recognize the true reason for this holiday, I'd like to honor my favorite veteran and his gorgeous bride... Army Lt. Col. (ret.) Jim Scott and Barbara Scott... also known to my sister and me as "Mom & Dad." My gratitude and respect goes out to them and all the other men & women in uniform.)

Beginning of a beautiful friendship

I've been brainstorming ideas for fun yet atypical bachelorette party ideas for gals who would prefer to explore a new city rather than leave their hard-earned bills in the undies of a random "exotic performer."

I was on a web quest for find some "I do" inspiration when the wedding gods smiled on me in the form of an email from Gretchen at HolidayGolightly.com. I quickly discovered it is the treasure trove of travel information for which I'd been searching.

As I perused the site, I started wishing I could get married again (to the same great groom, of course!) just so I could go on a girlfriend getaway to a fabulous locale. I also [briefly] caught myself wishing to be in yet another wedding just so I could justify a jaunt to an unfamiliar city under the guises of being a good bridesmaid.

When I checked out the Austin Spa Getaway, I pictured us wrapped in plush robes, reclined around a crystal blue pool, sipping tea infused with some exotic fruit. The only break in our relaxing conversation would come as we took turns getting an unwinding massage. All together now: ahhhhhhhhh.

Then I noticed the word "cuisine" in two getaway options. Oooh, a trip centered around meals? That's my kind of excursion, especially when you've been eating too many rice cakes and baby carrots to slim down for that lovely dress that really only looks good on the skinniest bridesmaid in the party.

Just the thought of Chicago deep dish pizzas and Chicago dogs got my juices flowing when I read about the Chicago Cuisine Getaway. Then when you add the "private party at chocolate lounge" to the package, well, I thought I couldn't go on. Pizza and chocolate? 'Nuff said. But then I forced myself to look ahead to the Seattle Cuisine Getaway which not only includes reservations at a sumptuous restaurant, but also features a food tour and a cooking class. If you have a bride whose culinary skills consist of pouring soy milk on cereal and ordering Chinese takeout, this could be a fun way to help her learn how to make at least one meal to share with her new husband!

But I was practically salivating after dreaming of delicacies on the cuisine getaways and I was sure I'd gained some weight just thinking about them so I clicked over to a trip that's a bit more figure flattering: the Boulder Active Getaway. We could strap on a helmet for the mountain bike tour to pump out the frustration of wedding planning and then take in a calming yoga class to chill after we'd purged our angst outside.

When planning a big out of town bachelorette party, though, you always have to think of Vegas, baby! Of course the Vegas Getaway includes show tickets and reservations at a swanky restaurant. The only question is how much of the bride's honeymoon budget are you going to gamble?

HolidayGolightly.com's trip to Tuscany and Umbria Getaway would be a phenomenal splurge excursion... but you can still make wonderful memories on a fantastic shopping getaway or delicious wine getaway. Just ask the Golightly gals to plan your perfect travel party.

At the moment, my mind has traveled to Casablanca... the movie -- not the real town in Morocco -- because I'm so glad I've found HolidayGolightly.com. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship...

Who's The Boss
posted by Kathy from BridesmaidEssentials.com: 4/28/2008 | 1 Comments | Permalink

Who's the boss? Bruce Springsteen still is.

My gal pal, Lauren, had an extra ticket to his tour stop with the E Street Band here in Charlotte, NC last night.

The show started with a beautiful memorial to organist & keyboard player Danny Federici, who just died April 17 from melanoma. It featured a photo & video tribute playing against Springsteen's voice singing "Blood Brothers."

But from there, the musicians exploded and I was awed to watch "The Boss" and the E Street Band continue a virtually non-stop jam of songs back-to-back. Their energy was extraordinary and it was an absolutely incredible experience to see one of the rock greats live in concert!

This awesome experience prompted a thought about "getting creative" when planning a bachelorette party... it's okay to think outside the strip club. For a bride who's a Parrothead, get tickets to a Jimmy Buffett concert. If she's a Mets fan, catch a game during the final season at Shea Stadium or take a trip to the hallowed old Yankee Stadium to see the Yankees at bat before they move to a new home, too. If you're just looking for some feel-good fun to get the bridal party ready for the trip down the aisle, catch the "I do"-infused Mamma Mia! on stages worldwide. Check out Ticketmaster for all kinds of ideas in your area for music, arts & theater, and sports events.

Having dinner then going to a game, concert or show is not your typical way to make pre-wedding memories with your best girlfriends -- it sure is fun, though! A bachelorette party doesn't have to involve a stripper... but there's always The Full Monty...

(a special "thank you" for additional sports information goes to my best bud, Brian -- he's a member of the Church of The New York Yankees...)
